[Urwid] just not getting navigation.

in my user interface, I have a role buttons across the top, and then two 
columns of information beneath it.  Left column is is static text based 
on which button has been pressed, the right hand column is a pile of 
edit boxes for fields that I want to edit.  The documentation leads me 
to believe that if I do the right magic, everything will automatically 
let user navigate between all of the edit boxes in the pile as well as 
between all of the buttons.  But I'm not able to reach those edit boxes 
and I am puzzled.  I tried calling set focus after creating the edit box 
pile but that did nothing.

I'm obviously missing something.  Pointers would be appreciated.
